The Journey of a Thousand Miles Hand Stitched Book

Recycled & Altered Art Travel Journal:

It's time for another fun challenge over at Eclectic Ellapu and the theme for the Pink Team this month is Travel. For my take on the Travel theme, I created a hand made book created entirely from scratch.

Recycled & Altered Hand Stitched Travel Journal Cover
Creating the Book:
I made the cover from pieces of mat-board left over from framing paintings and the pages inside the book are made from watercolor paper and I stitched each signature with a Coptic Stitch.

Recycled & Altered Hand Stitched Travel Journal Side View
I covered the cover with a piece of Parks map from British Columbia which I thought was rather cool as it lists places chose to where I live.

Recycled & Altered Hand Stitched Travel Journal / Book

I have always like the Thousand Miles saying and created a digital version which I printed out and used as one of the main focal points on the front. I thought since my book was created with a Travel theme in mind it would be nice if it had some kind of compass on it but since I didn't have one I made one also digital and cut it out all the layers with my set of circle die cuts. After I had all the elements I though it still need a little something else so used a piece of red polk-a-dot ribbon I had kicking around my art room. It

Above is a photo of the back of the book. It really is a Travel Book / Journal because I live in the area shown on the cover and have traveled all over those black and red lines. To finish off my book I added a simple cord as a closer with red wooden beads attached to end of the cord.

I hope you have enjoyed my Travel Book and will pop on over to the Ecelctic Ellapu Challenge Blog to see all the other wonderful Travel projects created by the Team. While you are there please also share your own art with us.

Reinvented Doll Book from Altered Board Book Part1

This month it is my turn to create the Featured Recycled Project for this month's challenge on Recycle, Re-Purpose & Re-Invent and I have created a Doll Book from recycled items.

The Front Cover with several pages peeking out from behind

I wanted my project to be really different from anything else you normally see around the web so this one is really a vision into my mind. My project for today is a Doll book which is something I have had in the back of my mind for some time and which is inspired by my love of faces and incorporated some of my original whimsical faces from my various digital stamp collections.

My Doll Book shown in the open position allowing you to see some of the inside pages

This book stands by it's self and the photo above is taken from a different angle and shows some of the pages contained in the book to the open position.

The photo directly above is page 1 & 2

The first photo at the very top of this post shows the front cover with several pages peeking out from behind. The photo directly above is page 2 & 3.

For the base of my book, I used the cardboard pages of a children's board book. I stripped the top picture layer from all the pages, cut them to shape and painted them with acrylic paint to seal and make it easier for my elements to stick to them. I then covered each side of each page with either text pages from an old book or various backgrounds from my Digital Engraving Background Digital Stamp Series. I also used some designs from my Digital Spirelli Templates ,bits of old greeting cards and some pieces of junk jewelry.

It was alot of fun creating this book. Although I have had a vision in my mind for this book for a long time, once I started in on it, it took on a life of it's own and went in a wonderful direction I had not expected.

Since this post has Part1 on the end of the post name, you might have already guessed that my book is not yet finished and still has more to come.  You have now seen the cover, and page 1 & 2. Although there are additional pages which show behind the ones you have already seen, I have not decided exactly how many it will contain once I deem it finished. I used book rings to hold the pages together and rather like this idea as I can add more and more pages by replacing the smaller book rings with larger ones. On the righ is a bit of the materials I used for my Reinvented and Recycled Doll Book. I love using children's board books for my art, they come in so many sizes and you can do so much with them including just using the individual pages as a base as I did for this project.

Still More Pages to Come !!!

Above are a couple of pages that follow the finished ones shown in this post. They have their expressive little little faces but nothing else except a bit of fun painting and splattering. I hope you have enjoyed this glimpse of my Altered Doll Book and will visit me again as I add more.

My Altered Book is entered in the following challenges:

Time to admit I am sometimes a bit overwhelmed: I have been struggling with health issues for quite a while now and sometimes when I am not doing well, time gets away from me, which also includes things related to my art. This month's Recycle, Re-Purpose & Re-Invent challenge was a bit late but it is up now and hope you will all go check it out. You will also find Our Winners for the last couple of challenges listed to the side bar. Thank you all for your patience and hope you will continue to play in our challenges.

Edgar Allan Poe Altered Puzzle Piece Book Part 1

Edgar Allan Poe Altered Puzzle Piece Book

Recycled & Altered Edgar Allan Poe Altered Puzzle Piece Book:

Today I am sharing an Altered Puzzle Piece book I created especially for this months challenge on Altered Eclectics. Although I have created other Puzzle Piece Books in the past, this one is extra special because I have been wanting to do one with an Edgar Allan Poe theme for a very long time.  Above on the right is the Back Cover and on the right is the Front cover of my Edgar Allan Poe Puzzle Piece Book

Edgar Allan Poe Altered Puzzle Piece Book pages 1 -2
Above are Page 1 & 2 of my Puzzle Piece Book ...
I made the wire scroll element on the top right page from plain old silver colored garden wire.

Once I started on it went a slightly bit different direction than I had first imagined, with a little less clean and a bit more grunge.

Edgar Allan Poe Altered Puzzle Piece Book pages
Above are Pages 3 & 4 ... The black flower hanging on the top ring
is a black wooden piece that was part of an earring I found at a 2nd hand shop.

Project Steps:
1.) Removed all the Puzzle Picture Layers and painted them with black acrylic paint.
2.) Glued a layer of either Printed Backgrounds or Book Pages to both sides of each puzzle piece.
3.) Added random acrylic paint in red, white and black and silver in various places
4.) Did a bit of splattering in the same colors above to each side of each Puzzle Piece.
5.) Embellished each side with designs from my Pieces of Poe digital stamp collection
6.) Continued by adding metal washers, buttons, wooden pieces and recycled jewelry bits

Above are Pages 5 & 6 Painted and Splattered and all ready to have something wonderful added to them. Thought the red splatter, smudges and drips look a little like blood and lent themselves nicely to something befitting Poe.

This book is a work in progress and for this post I only did the Front Cover and Pages 1,2 & 3. I will do the rest a little later in the month and share them in Part 2 of my Edgar Allan Poe Puzzle Piece Book and hope you will come back and see the additional pages.

Step 7.)
On the left is a close up of the main focal point on the Front Cover, the textured area directly under Poe was created with Aluminum Foil Tape run through my Cuddle Bug and then painted with black acrylic paint and wiped before it was completely dry.

As a closing photo below I thought you might like to see the baubles peeking from behind the pages above. The black bauble is recycled from an earring and the red from a necklace. I enjoy looking in second hand shops and often used reclaimed jewelry pieces in my pieces instead of buying ready made embellishments. I think it is alot more fun, very inexpensive and adds a very unique and original quality to a finished piece.

On the right is a close up of the recycled Jewelry Bits I used. I think they coordinate beautifully with look of the rest of the book.

Thank you for stopping by today, I hope you have enjoyed my Edgar Allan Poe Puzzle Piece Book and will come back for Part 2.

Please be sure to check out this months challenge at Altered Eclectics, join us by sharing your own projects with us and check out what the rest of the team has created. I promise you won't be disappointed, these ladies are amazingly talented.

All the Flowers Spring Art Tag

It`s time for another wonderful challenge at The Craft Garden and my project for this month is a Sprint Art Tag.

Yellow Flowers Spring Art Tag
The theme for this months challenge was to use 3 things from the list provided. I chose Yellow, Ribbon and Paint form the list.

The yellow flowers on the right of the tag are a piece recycled from an old greeting card. The beauty I used for the main focal point is one of my original digital stamp designs called Angel Face. The text back ground as well as the sentiment are also printed.

Our Spring is always a little late in coming up here in the Interior of Canada and these colors are a reminder of all the lovely colors that we will be experiencing soon.

I hope you have enjoyed my Spring Flower Art Tag and I look forward to having you join us in this month`s challenge at The Craft Garden.

Slide Mount Box from Recycled Cereal Box

Altered Photo Slide Mount Box: A couple of years ago I made some little boxes to store some of my creative elements such as my Altered Slide Mounts, Small Origami Papers and Mini Sentiments in. The boxes were made from recycled cereal, cake mix and cracker boxes.

Recycled handmade box with altered slide mounts
UN-adorned they looked quite hideous but I never found the time to do anything with them until now. Today I am sharing a much prettier version of the box I created to store my altered slide mounts in. Above is the top of the box. The mail focal point is one of my altered slide mounts and it uses my original Framed Geisha digital stamp design.  The Gold Embossed piece that serves as a backdrop for the top lid, is a piece of recycled greeting card.

Altered slide mounts
I created this alteration especially for this months challenge at Altered Eclectic.  Above is a view of the side of the box which shows the different papers used for the top and bottom as well as some of the slide mounts which have been covered with my digital backgrounds but still need to have more added to them to make them useable for upcoming projects.

Above is a photo of the lid sitting on top of the bottom of the box. Since this box was custom made for my slide mounts, they fit perfectly inside and it will serve as a prettier reminder to use them.

Recycled materials for altered slide mount box On the right is a photo of some of my boxes which haven't yet been decorated. The one on the top inside a lid is the one which contains my slide mounts. I hope you have enjoyed my little box. I am always so inspired by all the lovely things the rest of the team makes and hope you will go check them out to. While you are there, please be sure to join this months Altered Eclectics challenge.

Special Note: You will find a tutorial on how to altered recycled slide mounts, how to make your own from heavy card stock, as well as some projects I created with some of the ones I have made on my Art With No Boundaries blog.

Altered Tussie Mussie Eclectic Ellapu

This is my very first Tussie Mussie

Altered Tissue Mussie with porcelain figurine
I created this piece especially for this months challenge on Eclectic Ellapu .  It is rather a different type project for me, and it was a bit of a challenge, but it was such great fun to make.  I can truly say this was a labor of love because almost everything I used is either recycled, I made myself or been kicking around my art room for the past 15 years.

Altered Mixed Media Tissue Mussie

My List of Supplies.

I found the lovely little porcelain bust as well as the green tassel attached to the bottom in a thrift store 2 years ago and this was the perfect project for them .

The lace, netting, pink ribbon and white leaves left over from projects I made about 15 years ago.

I created the Once upon a time  digital sentiment for this because the little doll looks like she is surrounded by a surreal garden and belongs in a fairy tale.

The tiny heart under the bow is made with a punch and I used scraps too small for anything else. I painted the little heart with glitter finger nail polish.

The centers of the flowers are buttons and dollar store rhinestones. The Pearl element on the bottom was also a dollar store purchase.

Lastly my gold wire. I would be lost without this in my art room. I bought a huge roll when I was making wire flowers and still have lots left.

I hope you enjoyed my little Altered Tissue Mussie and will go on over to the Eclectic Ellapu and check out all the lovely things the rest of the team made. Who knew that there were so many different types of Tissue Mussies. :) I also hope you will come share your own art with us and I look forward to seeing your projects too.

Enjoy the Little Things Bicycle Card - The Craft Garden

Mixed Media Bicycle Card hand colored with Prismacolor Penciles: This is the first card I have made in almost 4 and half years. My big passion is Mixed Media, Altered & Recycled art and I never seem to get around to something this simplistic. It was rather a nice change and enjoy the over all theme as I also love Vintage.

The main focal point is a Victorian lady riding a bicycle and came from on old Victorian advertisement. She is one of the designs I will be adding to my new Collectibles and Ephemera digital stamp series. Since I like my printed images very clean this process seems to be taking a bit longer than I original though but I will get there and these will be available to the pubic soon.

I created this little simple gem for this months challenge over at The Craft Garden. The them for this month is  a couple of inspiration photos with an over all theme of  the Tour de Yorkshire bike race.

The process of creating my  card:
I colored the main focal point with Prismacolor pencils and blended them with odorless turpentine to give them a smoother look. The sentiment on the bottom was digitally created. The green and white raised background was created by running some card-stock I received from my daughter though my Cuddle bug and then sanding the surface lightly with an emery board. The decorative hanging embellishment was made from a decorative clip, a gold button and an element that came from a second hand find piece of jewelry.

I hope you have enjoyed a look at  a bit of bicycle riding from days gone by and hope you will go visit this months challenge at The Craft Garden and see what the rest of the team has created. I hope you will come share our own art with us as well.

Steampunk Envelope Book Eclectic Ellapu

It has been a long time since I made an envelope book and I had forgotten how much fun they can be and also such a great place to store special little mementos or things you want to be able to find easily.

 recycled art steampunk envelope book

I created this one for this months challenge on Eclectic Ellapu. It is sort of a vintage combined with steampunk theme and I made it to store some of my printed digital designs with a similar themes.

The cover of the box is made from left over mat board from framing. I covered the outside of my envelope book with text weight designer paper and used another piece of left over mate board to create a focal point for the font cover which would also hold the red satin ribbon in place

Steampunk recycled art altered envelope book

steampunk envelope book recycled re-purposed art I covered the the piece of extra mat board with strips from recycled book pages.  I then layered various elements on the top to create a sort of steam punk montage. Most of the backgrounds come from my Digital Engravings Background digital stamp series. The round clock elements are new some of my new original steam punk digital stamps which I will be adding to my CS Designs store soon.

The two photos directly above show the inside of the book as well as some of the types of designs I am going to store in my book.

The main focal point as well as some of the other designs shown inside the book are from my new CS Designs Digital Stamp Collectables and Ephemera Series. I plan to add quite a few new designs to this collection  which will expand the range of themes in the store.

Recycled Items for this project:
Pieces of old mat board left over from framing paintings used for the book cover (front, back and spine)
Printed page from old book
Small pieces of my printed original backgrounds left over from other mixed media projects
Red Satin Ribbon left over from creating mini grape vine wreaths
White stationary envelopes

Trinket Box from Recycled Items Altered Eclectics

Hello everyone, I made this little trinket box for the challenge over at Altered Eclectics. The  whole box was made from recycled material including a Dove Soap Box and a Cereal Box.

altered trinket jewelry box recycled project

The Top, Bottom and Inside of the box were created from a cereal box and the hinge part on the back which attaches the top and the bottom and allows it to flip open is from a recycled Dove Box.

The main focal point on the top is one of the designs from my CS Designs Collectables and Ephemera Digital Stamp Series and I colored it with Prismacolor pencils and blended it with odorless turpentine to give it a more subtle appearance.

recycled art altered trinket jewelry box

The rose on the bottom is a combination pieces the part with text i was created from a recycled page book and punch and then painted with re-inking ink. The bottom part was created using a punch and the heavier texture of the card-stock allowed me to curl the petals up a little to give the flower a more 3d look. The sentiment is also one of my digital stamp designs.

I though this little trinket box was the perfect place to store some of my junk jewellery  which I occasionally use as embellishments for my recycled projects, and the colors on the box coordinate with what is inside.
recycled art altered jewelry trinket box
I rather like this idea and may make some additional boxed in various colors to go with the rest of my collected jewelry pieces. Right now I store my 2nd hand jewellery in vintage glass jars and while they look really nice on my shelf, I always have to go through  all the jars looking for that perfect element to add to a project.

I hope you have enjoyed my little box and will go check out the Altered Eclectics challenge. This is such an amazing challenge and the talent there is incredible and sure you will find it inspiring.
